REFRACTIVE FELLOWSHIPS

FEI Refractive Fellowships provide young ophthalmologists with the practical and theoretical knowledge needed to become outstanding refractive clinicians and professionals.

The FEI has offered Refractive Fellowships since 2001. It has built a reputation for clinical excellence, in particular through the Filatov Preventive System.

The typical duration of FEI Refractive Fellowships is one calendar year.

Curriculum
The fellowship seeks to build three kinds of skills:

  • clinical and medical skills - ensuring best possible outcomes
  • scientific skills - incorporating innovations and sharing observations
  • relational skills - understanding the refractive patient
  1. - Clinical and Medical Skills include:
    Screening; Use of specific devices: Orbscan, OPD-Scan, etc
    Nomograms
    Surgical procedures: LASIK, Intralase, LASEK, CK
    Post-op care: routine care, management of complications, relifts Communicating with ODs
  2. - Scientific Skills include:
    Critical evaluation of current literature; "clinical networking"
    Dissemination of outside research within the organization
    Outcome analysis
    Clinical studies and presentations at major meetings
  3. - Relational training include:
    Understanding the refractive patient - before, during and after the procedure.
    Managing expectations;

Tools

The following tools will assist the Fellow in building the skills described:

  1. - Observation, Proctored Surgeries, Independent Surgeries (with Dr. Steven W. Stetson)
  2. - Summaries of journal articles and other key material; initiation of new research
  3. - Relationship coaching
