Filatov Total Safety System
Since 1996, the Filatov Preventive System has brought optimal safety and superior outcomes, reducing the incidence of side-effects and complications of LASIK surgery. In 2003, the system has been dramatically updated thanks to the introduction of CustomVue IntraLASIK, a combination of two revolutionary innovations.
- CustomVue reduces halos and improves night vision.
- IntraLASIK reduces complications even further, especially flap-related complications.
IntraLASIK also allows CustomVue to reach its full potential. The customized, microscopic treatment offered by CustomVue only works fully under a flap formed with the exquisite precision of IntraLASIK. Together, these two advancements constitute the Filatov Total Safety System.
“As good as the results of LASIK were, it can only be looked at as a procedure of the past century that paved the way for a no blade customized IntraLASIK. CustomVue IntraLASIK provides sharper vision with potentially better night vision compared to night vision before with glasses or contacts. Thanks to intralase it does it at a never before imagined level of safety.”

IntraLASIK

IntraLASIK is the single most important advance in vision correction since the invention of the excimer laser. IntraLASIK combines two steps:
- The sculpting of the cornea with an excimer laser – common to other procedures such as LASIK or PRK
- The creation of a flap using, not a blade as in LASIK, but a new form of laser energy for ultimate safety, sterility and precision.
- After the flap is created, the excimer laser sculpts the cornea to the required shape and depth, then the flap is placed back onto the cornea and seals.
Advantages of IntraLASIK
Safety: By eliminating the blade, Intralase has completely eliminated all blade-related complications – which made up over 90% of all LASIK complications. We may now have a procedure that’s even safer than wearing contact lenses.
Precision: Creating the flap is an automated procedure with IntraLASIK, no longer a manual procedure. The surgeon programs the laser to sculpt the corneal tissue at the exact depth required for the very best results.
More people are now eligible for LASIK: The new IntraLASIK allows the creation a flaps thinner than was ever possible – this is great news for people whose corneas were too thin for standard LASIK.
IntraLASIK: the Definitive Improvement
IntraLASIK brings the evolution of vision correction to full circle by building and improving on two key landmarks:
- In the 1970’s, ALK (Automated Lamellar Keratoplasty) introduced the idea of a protective flap, under which to sculpt the cornea. This made the procedure more comfortable and more predictable. Both steps, however – the sculpting and the flap-creation - were accomplished with a blade
- In the mid-1990’s, LASIK (Laser In-Situ Keratomelleusis) became immensely popular when the excimer laser was used to sculpt the cornea, bringing a new level of precision. The flap, however, was still created with a blade.
- Now, with BOTH steps accomplished with a laser, IntraLASIK is ushering in a new era of stability and predictability.

CustomVue™
 |
As of May 23rd, 2003 the FDA has approved VISX CustomVue™ laser vision correction, setting a new standard for vision correction, with the potential to enable better vision than contacts or glasses. |
The CustomVue™ procedure tailors a unique correction for each individual. It employs the VISX Wavescan and Waveprint system, a new diagnostic system that captures a “fingerprint” of the eye which is 25 times more precise than what was previously measurable by standard methods. Wavescan evaluates more than nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism; it captures other, more specific imperfections in each individual’s vision. The data is then used to generate an individualized treatment for a CustomVue™ procedure.
|
A six month evaluation of clinical study participants showed that four times as many patients were very satisfied with their night vision after the VISX CustomVue™ procedure, compared to their night vision before with glasses or contacts.
" I was very impressed by the results from CustomVue procedure presented at a recent American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Symposium and Congress in San Francisco ." - reported Howard Kornstein, M.D., Lead Surgeon of Filatov Eye Institute. “I was particularly encouraged by the possibility of improved night vision over contacts and glasses in addition to the sharper daytime vision. I think this is a great step forward in the advancement of laser vision correction, especially when coupled with the precision and proven safety of IntraLASIK.”
