Filatov Eye Institute Offers Latest, Safer, and More Precise
Laser Vision Correction Technology
IntraLASIK Opens the Door for Many Previously
Ineligible LASIK Candidates
GREENWICH, Conn. – Filatov Eye Institute announced today that it is now offering IntraLASIK, an all-laser LASIK. This new approach to laser vision correction is more effective in correcting farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism, reducing surgical risk by 95 percent and making LASIK available to patients whose corneas are too thin for standard LASIK.
“The scope of the procedure has changed allowing LASIK to be performed on patients, who previously did not qualify for the procedure,” says Dr. Filatov, who’s performed thousands of standard LASIK procedures. “I have performed IntraLASIK on patients whose corneas were either too flat or too thin to have standard mechanical LASIK.”
According to Dr. Filatov, IntraLASIK increases the effectiveness of the procedure because of its consistent accuracy and offers the welcomed reduction in the already low rate of complications and side effects. With IntraLASIK, Filatov Eye Institute can create perfect size flaps, which increases safety, not only during the procedure, but also for the rest of patients’ lives.
“Even for an experienced surgeon, it is great to know that those once possible surgical complications are now simply not possible with this revolutionary new laser technology,” said Dr. Filatov. “It removes the last bit of fear there was in having LASIK.”
Dr. Filatov continues, “While the initial step in LASIK, the creation of the flap, is performed with a mechanical device known as a microkeratome, which uses a steel blade to cut the flap, IntraLASIK creates the flap with the aid of a laser, thereby making LASIK a truly ALL-LASER procedure. A high quality corneal flap is essential for an excellent result. With IntraLASIK, both the pattern and the depth of the flap is more precise than the original and even advanced LASIK procedures, offering patients added assurance and a true peace of mind. Furthermore, creation of the flap is performed in a more sterile fashion.”
Having first performed the all-laser procedure a year and a half ago, Dr. Filatov is one of the first doctors in the United States to have gained all-laser LASIK experience with the INTRALASE™ FS Laser developed by IntraLase Corp. In 2001, the laser was cleared by the FDA and became commercially available on a limited basis.
According to IntraLase Corp., more than 15,000 procedures have been completed with no significant complications reported. Dr. Filatov is among an elite group of key opinion leaders in ophthalmology who continually evaluate advanced technologies and adopt them into practice as soon as they become available and proven effective and safe.
While Dr. Filatov recommends IntraLASIK, he consults his patients on the surgery that is best suited for them as an individual. A variety of instruments are now utilized in a myriad of procedures specifically tailored to the individual needs of each patient. The major task for potential candidates is to make certain that their needs are met with an individual treatment plan that’s suited to provide them with the best possible outcome.
Dr. Filatov continues to be one of the first refractive surgeons to evaluate and implement the most advanced techniques in refractive surgery. Trained at Yale, Harvard, and Johns Hopkins Medical School, he founded the Filatov Eye Institute in 2001 as a center for research and education. Through the Institute, Dr. Filatov devotes resources to teaching, informative seminars, a full-time LASIK fellowship program to heighten the standard of laser vision correction training across the country, and various community related activities. Each patient of the Filatov Eye Institute is given guidance and instruction prior to surgery concerning their customized treatment plan as well as several alternatives available for their unique situation.
The Filatov Eye Institute (FEI) is dedicated to the education of colleagues and patients alike on the latest advancements in the field of refractive surgery and on customization of these techniques to each individual based on their specific refractive error as well as their occupational and recreational needs. In addition, FEI provides educational programs for prospective patients, physicians and optometrists to ensure the highest standard of care for all patients. With proper education and guidance, patients can now customize treatment plans to suit their individual needs.
