Research The Filatov Eye Institute is a center for research and learning on the latest discoveries in refractive surgery. We participate actively in the creation of new knowledge and new techniques through our clinical research agenda. We investigate, evaluate and assess new techniques by hands-on practice as well as clinical trials. For example, through our own clinical research we were able to determine that the MARCO autorefractor was superior to the Colvard pupillometer in determining pupil size - an important component of screening. We are currently helping to push the frontiers of knowledge about the Intralase femtosecond laser. Teaching Our academic team systematically reads and reviews the refractive literature world-wide. The most relevant findings are brought to the attention of our doctors through regular "Grand Rounds", or are shared with our patients online. Through seminars and teach-ins, we inform and educate other doctors in the tri-state area. We also offer hands-on training for other surgeons. Finally, every year we select the ophthalmologist with the most potential to become an outstanding refractive surgeon, and we invite him or her to join us as a Refractive Fellow under the direction of Dr. Steven W. Stetson.
